MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING (2008)

A loose-knit group of musicians drawn from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (Dave Guy, Homer Steinweiss, Fernando Velez, Bosco Mann), El Michels Affair (Leon Michels, Toby Pazner), Antibalas (Nick Movshon, Aaron Johnson) and the Budos Band (Mike Deller, Daniel Fodder), the Menahan Street Band was assembled by producer Thomas Brenneck. Recorded in Brenneck's Menahan Street. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the conglomerate band blended a whole array of influences into a fresh approach to instrumental soul music that is as odd and quirky as it is familiar.

Manu Dibango - Africadelic (1973)

Dibango is Cameroon's, and perhaps Africa's, best-known jazz saxophonist. Starting in the 1950s, he became a globe-trotting musician, living and performing in France, Belgium, Jamaica, Zaire, and Cote d'Ivoire, as well as in Cameroon. In 1960, Dibango was one of the founding members of the Zairean band African Jazz, with whom he spent five years. World attention came to Dibango with the release in 1972 of Soul Makossa, a work that actually had precious little of the makossa sound in it, and scored later hits with Seventies and Ibida. Dibango's output has been prodigious and multi-faceted. He has worked with musicians as diverse as Fela Kuti, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Don Cherry, and the Fania All-Stars. In addition to being one of the leading jazz saxophonists of his generation, Dibango has also run nightclubs, directed orchestras, and started one of the first African musical journals. A later release, Polysonik -- featuring English rapper MC Mello, Cameroonian singer Charlotte M'Bango leading a choral section, and sampled pygmy flutes -- shows that Dibango is continuing to flourish and expand in challenging new directions

THE LOST TRIDENT SESSIONS (1973)

Recorded in London on June 25, 1973, these sessions for a planned third Mahavishnu Orchestra album were shelved when the band decided to put out the live Between Nothingness and Eternity instead. Bootlegged in the past, two-track mixes of the missing album were discovered in the vaults in the late 1990s, paving the way for its official release in 1999. It's thus the last of the three studio albums done by the original Mahavishnu lineup (with Cobham on drums, Goodman on violin, Hammer on keyboards and Laird on bass). Although McLaughlin had been the only composer on the first two Mahavishnu albums, he penned only of the six tracks here, with Hammer writing two and Laird pitching in one. It's fiery, if perhaps over-busy at times, fusion, McLaughlin reaching his most feverish pitches in the frenetic concluding passage of the ten-minute "Trilogy." The numbers written by other members than McLaughlin tend to be a little more subdued, and perhaps unsurprisingly less inclined toward burning guitar solos. - Allmusic

TOTAL ECLIPSE (1974)

This is Billy Cobham's third solo recording under his own name and is a fine follow-up to Crosswinds. The mini-suite "Solarization" not only showcases the band's technical abilities, but also Cobham's strong compositional skills. It also features a schizophrenic piano solo ("Second Phase") from the underrated pianist Milcho Leviev, who sounds like a mutation of Cecil Taylor and Bill Evans. The funky "Moon Germs," on which John Abercrombie is pushed to inspiring new heights, became a Cobham classic. "The Moon Ain't Made of Green Cheese" is a beautiful flugelhorn solo by Randy Brecker backed by Cobham's debut on piano. The band stretches out on the lengthy "Sea of Tranquility," while "Last Frontier" is a gratuitous drum solo. This recording is highly recommended as Cobham still sounds inspired. - Allmusic

STANDARDS (2001)

Revered for their ineffably clean, precise playing, Tortoise couldn't help but mess with the formula slightly on their fourth album, Standards. And from the beginning of the first track it sounds like a major overhaul, with heavily over-miced drums and distorted guitars framing a pummeling groove from bassist Doug McCombs. On the second track "Eros," the phlegmatic synthesizer lines and clipped drums are more reminiscent of experimental electronica outfit Mouse on Mars than any fellow post-rock luminaries. When the band finally hits its stride, though, midway through the third track, "Benway," it's with a quintessential Tortoise groove, driven by repetitive bass figures and a vibraphone melody (plus a hilarious nod to prog-rock at the end, with several seconds of stop-start playing). Standards does return the group to the green fields of their last record, but only occasionally; John McEntire and company appear too restless to consider making the same album twice. Ironically, despite the range of sounds, Tortoise is still doing what they've been doing for nearly a decade: playing some of the most empathic, group-minded rock of their era, then indulging in much recomposition courtesy of the mixing desk and various effects. "Monica" is one of the least Tortoise-sounding tracks the group has ever recorded; it sounds like an early-'80s pop/R&B track (complete with talkbox guitar) filtered through the lens of British IDM, but then mutates into an intriguing stereo-separation drum workout. Overall, Standards has a few detours for fans conscious of any band's "progression," but plenty of interesting songs and great musicianship for less vested listeners. Though it doesn't develop the evocative or impressionistic side of Tortoise (as heard on TNT), the band is certainly as inventive as ever. - Allmusic

Azymuth - The Best of Azymuth

One of the greatest bossanova funk jazz trio ever made. Azymuth is an electrified trio from Brazil that calls its music samba doido, which means "crazy samba." The actual sounds, though, are not so crazy: an intelligent, high-voltage blend of Brazilian rhythms, jazz, and funk with occasional acoustic episodes that gained a sizable following in the 1980s. This guys really blow my mind, it was very hard to pick one his records, so i decided to make a selection of their stuff. Enjoy !

Four Tet - Rounds (2003)

For his solo projects, Fridge's Kieran Hebden is a lo-fi experimentalist who, had he been recording 15 years ago, would've been cranking out songs on a four-track recorder instead of a laptop. As demonstrated on his third record, Rounds, he's one of the few musicians capturing all the promise inherent in computer science -- being able to summon, manipulate, and mix any sound imaginable. The record offers something to nearly every audience that could approach it, with a bit of a groove for electronic fans, an obtuse sense of music-making for experimentalists, and a dreamy melodicism sure to endear it to indie-pop fans. The opener, "Hands," is especially breathtaking; it begins with a few seconds of drum samples, surgically inserted and ill-timed, but opens into a warm, melodic production with a simple frame-kit beat outlining Hebden's guitar-and-keyboard atmospherics. "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth" features a music-box melody playing against softly shaded backmasked guitar and a subdued, grating percussion line reminiscent of an iron lung. The nine-minute "Unspoken" alternates guitar and piano playing the same beatific melody, over another simple beat and tambourine claps. Though Rounds is experimental by nature, Kieran Hebden's gift for melody and emotional shading allows his records to be enjoyed by an audience wider than merely experimental listeners. one of my favorites.

A LIVINGROOM HUSH (2002)

A Livingroom Hush is the debut by Norwegian jazz/electronics outfit Jaga Jazzist, released in the United Sates on Ninjatune a year later. A Livingroom Hush is simply one of the most enigmatic outings to ever come out of either genre (and how many times can you say that?). Realized after the group had been together for nine years and led by the stunningly original compositions of Lars Horntveth (who began composing for the group when he was 14 in 1994), A Livingroom Hush is so deeply ingrained in its ensemble textures and striated harmonics that Jaga Jazzist almost never sounds like a big band. - Allmusic

Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue (1957)

Of all the major singers of the late 20th century, Nina Simone was one of the hardest to classify. She recorded extensively in the soul, jazz, and pop idioms, often over the course of the same album; she was also comfortable with blues, gospel, and Broadway. It's perhaps most accurate to label her as a "soul" singer in terms of emotion, rather than form. Like, say, Aretha Franklin, or Dusty Springfield, Simone was an eclectic who brought soulful qualities to whatever material she interpreted.

King Crimson Songbook (2005)

The Crimson Jazz Trio was a jazz trio led by drummer Ian Wallace, formerly of King Crimson who re-interpreted King Crimson's music.
The trio was conceived by Wallace, who recruited Tim Landers
(bass) and Jody Nardone (piano) in 2004. They recorded the album The King Crimson Songbook, Volume One in 2005 and this has been their only release. The album includes material from beyond Wallace's tenure in King Crimson.
The band were working on a second album, The King Crimson Songbook, Volume Two, with assistance from Jakko Jakszyk
and Mel Collins (Wallace's colleagues in 21st Century Schizoid Band; Collins is also a King Crimson alumnus) when Wallace died on February 22, 2007.

Misel Quitno - Sleep Over Pieces Vol.1(2007)

Misel Quitno is another moniker in Dimitri Grimm’s name-arsenal. Mainly known for his elaborate ProgHiphop JazzElectronica-productions as ‘Dimlite’, Grimm here skips on drawn-out arranging, on sampling bits off other people’s records and also renounces to fulfill any noble purposes. The album, described by the artist as ‘drafts... the score to an imaginary film, shot on Super 8, or a sample library, done for the pure fun of it’, is a mixed bag of tricks, kept together by a dry and minimalistic aesthetics. The wafting
synths, the knuckles knocking on wood, the layered guitars and the Tubas indeed might have worked as the backdrop to a 1960’s avant-garde romantic psycho-tragicomedy. And
looking at the man’s working methods, who knows when Grimm will also tap into making the corresponding films to his Misel Quitno-escapades ‘for the pure fun of it’..

Tapestry (1974)

It lays somewhere between the sounds of 70's Free-Jazz and Fusion. It was recorded at Ornette Coleman's Artist House and produced by Noah Howard. Includes Richard Daniel and Tim Ingles, who along with Ted Daniel were founding members of the band Brute Force.

Skalpel (2004)

If the electronic musicians of Western Europe and America ever run out of likely samples -- and every session of Solid Steel deforests at least three or four pristine, previously untouched performances -- it will be left up to others to dredge the world of recorded music for the sample sources needed to evoke what they will. The duo Skalpel, discovered in Poland by Russian expat DJ Vadim on a tour, reportedly has a large collection of, and affinity for, Polish jazz. Their self-titled debut for Ninja Tune, which appears after several underground mixes never widely available, illustrates that Skalpel bring the delicious tensions of Cold War-era jazz to the much less inhibited filmic funk of Ninja Tune acts such as Mr. Scruff or Cinematic Orchestra. Sampled or not, Skalpel is a very live-sounding record; despite the occasional crackle of a dusty LP, the duo at times uses extensive soloing passages from the musicians they've either hired or sampled (much of it excellent). And the range of that sampling is broad; Skalpel surveys several decades of jazz, from late-'50s beatnik cool to late-'60s distorted, electric jazz-rock to the deep, exploratory fusion of the '70s. Though the record includes a lot of worthy music, it does raise the question of who deserves credit for it, Skalpel or their sample victims? Perhaps Ninja Tune should have followed the lead of Stones Throw and presented a retrospective of Polish jazz instead of allowing Skalpel to sample at will.
